I belong to Discount Tire Club and there would be no cost to me. As a woman alone, I felt nitrogen would be the way to go - less maintenance for me. I wouldn't have to worry about checking tire pressure. Also, I have heard that the tires last longer.|||Nitrogen is larger than oxygen, so it is less likely to escape the tire. So your tire stays at the proper pressure longer (all tires will loose pressure over time).
Free for you then go for it, it wont hurt anything. But I would never pay for it. Remember, the air we breathe (and compress to fill our tires) is ~78% nitrogen anyways... So your tires have that same amount.|||Regular air is 80 per cent nitrogen. If you regularly drive in races on a track, using pure nitrogen in your tires might have a minor advantage. If not, don't bother. Even with nitrogen in place of normal air, you still have to check air pressure. As far as tires lasting longer, not really. They claim oxygen breaks down rubber, but what is on the OUTSIDE of your tires? Regular air, with 20 per cent oxygen.|||Nitrogen is free of water vapour and is good thing in tires because water can freeze and it also deteriorates rubber.
Nitrogen does not expand as much as air at high temperatures and altitudes either so you don't get massive fluctuations in your tire pressure. That's why they use it is aircraft tires. Don't want the tires blowing up in the wheel wells at 40,000 feet; do we?
I did not know that nitrogen molecules where larger but if that's the case I guess that could be a benefit in a low quality tire.
There really isn't much benefit to using nitrogen in a regular passenger car tire but if they offer it for free, why not.|||If its free then no reason not too.
